Somewhere Only We Played...

The Victoria Centre, Nottingham once again echoed to the sweet sounds of NYJO combo, as they played host to 60 or so of John Lewis' most important customers.

The champagne flowed, the amuse-bouche were most amuse-ing, and the general ambience was made just that bit more special by the 5-strong combo.

The highlight of the event was undoubtedly combo's new arrangement of "Somewhere Only We Know" - pop ballad written by Keane, and performed by Lily Allen in John Lewis' Christmas TV advert campaign.  Combo performed the song to announce the arrival of the store manager to the stage.  To quote the manager "...who needs Lily Allen when you've got a band like this..."  nuff said!

Tony Kofi's Workshop 9th Nov '13

For the second time in one week, members of NYJO had the opportunity to work with international jazz great Tony Kofi.

Our Patron led NYJO1 Big Band in a workshop on his own composition "If I Spoke My Mind", arranged by Guy Barker.

Combo at The Bonington - 7th Nov '13

A packed-out bar witnessed a great NYJO combo gig at The Bonington, Arnold on Thursday 7th November. The band comprising of four front-line and three rhythm was led by Tenor Saxophonist Henry Bentham, as they entertained with such old favorites as "Pass It On" and "One By One" as well as new additions to the repertoire "Time Will Tell" and "Cubano Chant".  There were features for David Barron on "On Broadway" and Charlie Egan on "Norwegian Wood".  The band also gave a world premiere of a piece written for Carl Billson, former Chair of NYJO.  The new tune entitled "Billson's Bounce" was appreciated by all - thanks for everything you've done for us Carl!

In the second set, we were joined by our patron Tony Kofi for two tunes - "Cold Duck Time" and "Ladybird". Performing with such a talented and enthusiastic musician is a great buzz.  We look forward to working with Tony again soon.

Tony was performing with Arnie Somogyi's "Scenes In The City".  The  sextet played the music of double bass exponent Charlie Mingus.  Check out the review of the gig here.

NYJO rehearse Tony Kofi's music

NYJO tutor Ben Lee has ‘taken delivery’ of a score titled "If I Spoke My Mind" from our patron Tony Kofi.  We are honoured that Tony has provided this and will be joining NYJO1 Big Band in a workshop in early November.  This great opportunity is funded as part of the Miles Ahead Jazz Education Programme supported by EMJAZZ -

Tony’s  challenging composition was originally arranged for the BBC Big Band at the time he won the 2008 BBC Jazz Awards for Best instrumentalist. Now NYJO1 are going to rehearse his piece with Musical Director Phil Smith for a future performance yet to be arranged.

A quartet version of  ‘If I Spoke My Mind’ can be heard at:

It was recorded on a Tony Kofi Quartet CD called The Silent Truth.  John Fordham rated this with 4 stars in his review the CD for the Guardian and commented, “The urgently uptempo If I Spoke My Mind suggests a twist on Coltrane's Impressions but with a Latin countermelody...”
