NYJO is well-known as a glittering show-case for the country's best young musicians. Many in the rising generations of jazz musicians have passed through its ranks, often becoming established jazz stars whilst still playing with NYJO. They are performing on 28th November at the Newark Palace Theatre.
Founded in 1965 by current Musical Director, Bill Ashton MBE, NYJO has performed hundreds of concerts all over Britain including Ronnie Scott's, The Barbican, Symphony Hall Birmingham, Usher Hall Edinburgh, The Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall, as well as at theatres, clubs and schools. NYJO has performed in numerous television and radio shows, recorded around 40 albums, and visited most European Countries as well as the USA, Australia and New Zealand.
NYJO’s aims are to:
- provide an opportunity for gifted young musicians from all over Britain to meet together regularly and to play big band jazz to a very high standard and excellence. Enabling young musicians to gain experience of working to high professional standards in major concert halls and theatres
- share the talents of these exciting young players with the general public through concert performances, recordings and radio and television programmes
- commission new works from British composers, arrangers and song-writers
- introduce and nurture a love of jazz amongst school children
- increase the awareness and enjoyment of jazz amongst as wide an audience as possible
