NYJO entertaining at Jazz Competition
Over this early October weekend a total of 11 pianists from around the world entertained audiences in a thrilling competition. The standard of musicianship was awesome! And NYJO were proud to have been invited to entertain provide at the intervals of the finals at the Albert Hall venue.
The winner was Logan Thomas from the USA, with runners up Jake Sherman, Chris Donnelly and,at 15 years the youngest competitor, Mathias Picard. Clement Pianos, based in Nottingham, did a fantastic job in presenting this competition that also has sponsorship from Kawai Pianos, EM Jazz and Jazz Steps. The five judges are well-respected and prolific jazz pianists - David Newton, Zoe Rahman, Robert Mitchell, Jonathan Gee and Tim Richards.
First prize includes a Kawai piano worth over £17,500 and the four finalists get recording sessions to make a CD and gigs around the UK.
Criteria used by the judges were:
- Groove, sense of pulse and rhythm
- Jazz language
- Presentation / performance
- Originality
- Varied programme, different styles
- Range of tone, colour and texture
