First BBC Young Musician jazz award won by saxophonist

Alexander Bone

Teenage saxophonist Alexander Bone has won the first jazz prize to be awarded as part of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year competition.
The 17-year-old from Darlington beat two other saxophone players, a trumpeter and a double bassist in the final in Cardiff.
The A-level student was praised by the judges for his passion and sound.
The contest runs alongside the established Young Musician of the Year for classical performers.
It was first held in 1978 and helped launched the careers of Alison Balsom and Nicola Benedetti among others.
Violinist Benedetti, who won in 2004, will take on an ambassadorial role for the competition, which will crown a new winner on 18 May in Edinburgh.
The final of the jazz competition will be screened on BBC Four on 23 May.
Contenders performed with the Gwilym Simcock Trio at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
Simcock called the inaugural competition a "really special and unique experience".

"All these musicians have a wonderful future in the music world and it's been a pleasure to have even a tiny part in their development,' he said.
